THE LIBRARIES

Serving three campuses, the University of Washington Libraries is one of the largest and most innovative libraries in North America with collections exceeding 9 million volumes, over 1.5 million electronic books, more than 190,000 currently received journal titles, as well as millions of scholarly resources in other formats. CATALOGING AND METADATA SERVICES

Cataloging and Metadata Services (CAMS) is one of four departments in the Collections & Content portfolio of the University of Washington Libraries. CAMS provides enhanced copy and original cataloging of monographs, serials, and integrating resources for all three University campuses, as well as Cascadia College, in all formats and subjects and in numerous languages, according to national cataloging standards. CAMS also provides subject analysis and authority work for digital collections and electronic dissertations and theses. CAMS is comprised of 27 staff (15 classified staff and 12 librarians) organized in four units: International Studies, Metadata and Cataloging Initiatives, Monographic Cataloging, and Serials Cataloging. The UW Libraries uses OCLC’s cataloging and metadata services and a consortial implementation of the Alma library management system and the Primo discovery service through the Orbis Cascade Alliance. UW Libraries is active in all four programs of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, and SACO), and has consistently been one of the largest contributors of new LC subject, genre/form, and demographic group authority records.

THE POSITION

Reporting to the Head of the Metadata and Cataloging Initiatives Unit, the E-resources Metadata Librarian manages cataloging workflows for monographic and integrating electronic resources. This position works collaboratively within and outside the department to implement e-resources metadata strategies that best support library operations and discovery. The E-resources Metadata Librarian coordinates and contributes to the cataloging of monographic and integrating e-resources. This position also leads cataloging remediation and enrichment projects to ensure optimal discovery of the Libraries’ collections.

The successful candidate will have the ability to thrive in a future-oriented Libraries environment, and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities. This is a full-time position with a flexible start date.

The University of Washington and the Service Employees International Union, Local 925 (SEIU 925) are currently in the process of negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Identifies metadata options for e-resource packages that best support library operations and timely discovery.
  • Creates record import profiles and performs batch record loading, maintenance, and enhancement.
  • Analyzes monographic e-resource package entitlements and addresses gaps in discoverability.
  • Coordinates the distribution of cataloging requests for monographic and integrating e-resources to other catalogers.
  • Contributes to original and complex copy cataloging (bibliographic description, subject and genre/form analysis, classification, and authority control) of monographic and integrating e-resources using OCLC/MARC tagging, Resource Description & Access (RDA), LC-PCC Policy Statements and Program for Cooperative Cataloging guidelines, Library of Congress classification, and Library of Congress subject headings, genre/form terms, and demographic group terms.
  • Contributes headings to the national authority files through NACO and SACO; may participate in BIBCO by contributing full level PCC records to OCLC. May serve as a cataloging liaison between the department and selected library units.
  • Assesses metadata integrity and leads cataloging remediation and enrichment projects.
  • Develops and maintains department documentation related to e-resource cataloging and cataloging remediation and enrichment.
  • May recruit, hire, train and supervise student and/or hourly employees.
  • Pursues opportunities for professional growth aligned with position responsibilities, and professional interests and goals. Follows trends in the profession and continually updates knowledge of issues and current developments as they relate to the position.
  • Contributes to the UW Libraries and the profession through productive service in professional associations, consortial activities, and University Libraries committees and task forces, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate appropriately, effectively, and positively. Uses the strategies in the Libraries’ Personal Communication Responsibility Guidelines.

RANK

BENEFITS

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.

SALARY

$54,000 minimum. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ANTICIPATED START DATE

While we hope to fill the position by Summer 2022, we are happy to work with the successful candidate to explore opportunities for an earlier or later start date.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  • Experience cataloging library materials, including e-resources, using OCLC/MARC tagging and cataloging and classification standards such as RDA, LCC/LCSH/LCGFT, and BIBFRAME.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in providing and managing metadata for electronic and digital resources.
  • Experience batch loading MARC records.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Experience using OCLC Connexion.
  • Experience using OCLC WorldShare Collection Manager.
  • Experience using Alma library management system resource management functions, import profiles, and normalization rules, especially in a consortial environment.
  • Experience using metadata and knowledgebase manipulation tools such as KBART, MarcEdit, regular expressions, and Python.
  • Experience contributing headings to national authority files through NACO and/or SACO.
  • Experience planning and implementing cataloging remediation and enrichment projects.
  • Working knowledge (ability to catalog with the use of a dictionary as necessary) of one or more languages in addition to English.
  • Evidence of excellence in the documentation and explanation of complex procedures.
