The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Cardiothoracic Surgery Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to act as Lead Advanced Practice Provider (APP) of a team providing intraoperative and ambulatory care on the cardiac surgery service primarily based at the University of Washington Medical Center Montlake Campus (UWMC-ML). Additionally, this individual may be required to provide intermittent coverage at the Seattle VA Puget Sound Healthcare System. This position will encompass both a role in the operating room and in the ambulatory care setting.

The Cardiac Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Lead is responsible for the leadership and development of APPs as part of the Cardiothoracic Surgery multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, fellows, residents, and RNs providing intraoperative and ambulatory care services to patients and families. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialty consultation and clinical care primarily for cardiac surgery patients, including participating as part of the operating team. Additionally, this individual will act as Lead APP, providing support for six other APPs functioning in a similar role.

This position provides a faculty appointment at the rank of Teaching Associate in the Department of Surgery, with an anticipated start date in Summer 2022. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms.  Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.  University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work on a dedicated cardiothoracic inter-professional team with other established APPs and Cardiac Surgeons.
  • Function as first or second assist in the operating room.
  • Perform independent endoscopic vein and radial artery harvest.
  • Provide pre-screening evaluation and follow-up care for cardiac surgery patients in the ambulatory care setting.
  • Assist physician faculty to address clinical issues within scope of practice.
  • Act as a liaison between the medical and surgical team members in the pursuit of the delivery of exceptional care.
  • Share in responsibility of APP ambulatory care and OR coverage including 24/7 call.
  • Coverage of intermittent cardiac surgery OR shifts at the Seattle VA Puget Sound Healthcare System.
  • Participate in the education of nursing staff and surgical residents.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and process improvement activities for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Additional Lead APP duties:

  • In collaboration with the Senior Lead APP of CT Surgery, actively support programs and services that promote the long-range strategic objectives of UW Medicine and UWMC.
  • Serve as a resource, liaison, advocate, and mentor to individuals on the Cardiac Surgery APP team, identifying opportunities for improvement and development.
  • Assist with recruitment and hiring of APP faculty, conduct initial competency assessment, plan appropriate orientation, and provide input regarding annual evaluation process.
  • Plan and implement APP coverage for UWMC-ML Cardiac Surgery Clinic and Operating Room including 24/7 OR call schedule and required coverage at Seattle VA Puget Sound Healthcare System.
  • Act as delegate from the Cardiac Surgery APP team, collaborating with multidisciplinary team to develop and maintain cardiac surgery ambulatory care and OR operations
  • Understand and maintain scope of practice knowledge related to patient care and standards for APPs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience as an APP in an operative setting and ambulatory care setting
  • Current and valid state Registered Nurse and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner licensure for ARNP or Physician Assistant licensure for PA-C
  • Graduate Degree from and accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Nationally certified ARNP/PA with DEA
  • Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment
  • Superlative interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients undergoing Cardiothoracic Surgical procedures.
  • ACLS Certification
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic computer knowledge and command of basic personal computer skills
