Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the dxʷdəwʔabš (Duwamish people) and Coast Salish peoples, the College of Education (COE) at the University of Washington (UW) is seeking a visionary educator whose academic and professional experience in sports education and leadership speak to equity and social justice.

 

The Assistant Teaching Professor of Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership (IAL) will play a leadership role as faculty within the Center for Leadership in Athletics (CLA). The Center for Leadership in Athletics is rooted in the idea that effective, equitable leadership is essential within all roles of an athletics enterprise and can ensure the positive impact athletics can have on student-athletes and broader society. In the spirit of this idea, the CLA serves to (1) enrich the student-athlete experience, through the development of equitable and socially just leaders in athletics and (2) engage with campus and community leaders in positioning physical activity as a valuable element of education for holistic youth development and an important component of a more inclusive, equitable and healthy community.

 

The Assistant Teaching Professor filling this role will collaborate with a team of faculty, staff, students, and community partners working to advance and sustain a focus on developing effective leadership to create inclusive, equitable and justice-driven programs in sport and athletics, in order to realize the promise of positive, youth sport experiences. The role combines undergraduate and graduate instruction, administration and management within the CLA portfolio of initiatives, and program development to expand and sustain efforts focused on coaching education and sport organization leadership. 

 

The position will carry the non-tenure rank of Assistant Teaching Professor and is a three-year, 9-month position at 100% FTE with two paid months of summer available based on curricular need. Renewal of this appointment will be considered in the second year of the appointment. 

 

Primary responsibilities include:

  1. Serve as a member of both the IAL M.Ed. program, and the Sports & Education program within the Education, Community, and Organizations (ECO) undergraduate program, collaboratively planning and maintaining the curriculum for both these programs, including required core courses, electives and ancillary program activities. Participate in the programs’ ongoing work to make meaningful connections between campuses and community partners to support the healthy, holistic development of young people and their communities through engagement in physical activity and sport. 
  2. Teach approximately four courses per year (2-3 graduate and 1-2 undergraduate). Serve as a lead instructor for these courses and support diverse student populations within the IAL M.Ed. program, the undergraduate sport and education elective series, and doctoral students with a focus on athletic leadership
  3. Coordinate the IAL M.Ed. program internship activity and career preparation advising. Work with the Advisory board, program alumni, and other key partners to support, enhance the student experience in the programs, provide support to students as they enter the career field and provide continuing professional development initiatives
  4. Manage a portfolio of programs/projects as a member of the CLA senior leadership team to support program development; manage students and staff working on CLA initiatives, oversee the execution and improve sustainability of CLA initiatives such as graduate and undergraduate academic programs, sport coaching education research and training, and sport-leader professional development and networking programs 
  5. Develop and teach additional elective courses in partnership with other faculty that pertain to emerging program needs and the candidate’s areas of expertise and practice. 
  6. Work with the IAL and ECO academic advisers and Lead Faculty to provide support structures and processes for student progress through the program that supports the College’s efforts to diversify and enhance youth sport professionals. 
  7. Collaborate with the CLA efforts to cultivate partnerships with university or community organizations to link theory with practice and build shared capacity to do justice and equity work together in the area of physical activity and sports.
  8. Collaborate with the IAL and ECO faculty and staff in the development and implementation of recruitment efforts to support Black, Indigenous, and students of color.  Contribute to practices and curriculum that help BIPOC students thrive as members of our college community.  
  9. Participate in events to promote the mission of the college and the programs linked with youth development and healthy communities through physical activity and sport opportunities.
  10. Work with and develop just relationships with diverse groups of adult learners who hold both historically privileged and excluded identities, including race, culture, gender identity, sexual identity, social class, age, language, well-being, mental health, disability, and/or religion.

 

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to: instructional expertise in areas such as management and operation of sports organizations, including those community-based and within higher education institutions; leadership and professional development preparation, including career options for students interested in education and/or athletics; research in the area of sports management and/or sport coaching experience in coaching and supervising early leaders in athletics, especially in underrepresented communities (BIPOC, LBGTQIA); experience and/or instructional expertise in coaching education.

Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate (e.g. PhD or EdD) or foreign equivalent in Education or other relevant field or discipline, with a strong emphasis in an area including, but not limited to, sport management, curriculum and program development, critical and culturally sustaining pedagogies, and/or community-based sport organization development, 
  • A minimum of five years of teaching and/or coaching experience
