Position Description

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington is seeking to hire a full-time faculty member at the Associate Professor or Full Professor without Tenure due to funding (WOT) level. This individual would be hired to fill the role of Vice Chair (individuals hired at Professor level) or Associate Chair (individuals hired at Associate Professor level) of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI). This is a funded position with a minimum of 0.3 FTE dedicated for JEDI activities. There is flexibility based on the applicant’s interest in clinical or research duties, to pursue the clinician scientist pathway or clinician educator pathway.

The role of the JEDI Chair is to be a catalyst and leader in advancing justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion across the missions of clinical care, service, research, education, and advocacy. This position will focus on creating and sustaining 1) an inclusive culture, 2) a diverse department of faculty, trainees and staff, and 3) equity, inclusion, and anti-racism as part of all aspects of department operations. The JEDI Chair will also serve as an expert resource and partner for equity issues related to obstetric and gynecologic patients and reproductive health care via collaboration with UW Medicine's Office of Healthcare Equity.

The JEDI Chair will work in partnership with the Department Chair and the Department DEI Council to:

  • Develop and elevate a strategic vision for advancing justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Department
  • Advance a mission of justice and equity through working to dismantle policies and procedures that have historically oppressed and disenfranchised individuals and communities within and beyond the Department
  • Advance health equity in our clinical services and in the communities we serve, including building relationships with community partners
  • Support the recruitment, development, and retention of diverse faculty, staff, and learners, promoting a supportive, inclusive, and accountable climate
  • Foster a workplace and learning environment free of stereotypes and unwarranted, avoidable, and unfair differences in opportunity, access, participation, relationship, and use of individual talents
  • Building a culture and infrastructure that enables a data-driven approach for continuous improvement and accountability around DEI efforts

This position will be fully supported by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology through regular meetings with leadership. Resources for success include administrative project management FTE, support from the Department DEI Council, UW School of Medicine Office of Health Care Equity, and the UW Office of Faculty Affairs.

Academic rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with experience.

This is a 12-month service period position [July 1 - June 30] with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.

UW Medicine encompasses 4 hospitals including UW Montlake Hospital, Northwest Hospital, Harborview Medical Center and Valley Medical Center. The department supports a residency program, three fellowship programs and is a major teaching site for UW medical students.

The University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Candidates interested in clinical patient care will be expected to provide medical services at the University of Washington affiliated hospitals, train residents and medical students, and make academic contributions to the field.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO. A foreign equivalent is acceptable.
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience with management of equity-focused programs and initiatives in a large, complex healthcare setting
  • Prior history of leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in multidisciplinary teams and independently to advance justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in using data for continuous quality improvement and accountability related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstration of excellent clinical and surgical skills and academic excellence in research if pursuing the clinician scientist pathway.

Positive factors for consideration include, but not limited to, fluency in Spanish, Amharic or other non-English language.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
