Position Summary:

The Assistant Dean for EDI in Research and Graduate Education (ADEDIRGE) will have a key role in coordination between OHCE (Office of Health Care Equity) and the biomedical science departments (previously Basic Science Departments), research environments and training programs in the UW School of Medicine (UWSOM) that advance the objectives in the UW Medicine Healthcare Equity Blueprint (link) and deliver on our mission to develop an organizational culture that is anti-racist, inclusive and equitable throughout UW Medicine.

 

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Dean for EDI in Research and Graduate Education will have responsibility for ensuring the activities of the OHCE are coordinated with and responsive to the needs of faculty, staff and trainees in the biomedical science departments, research environments and non-clincial training programs in the school of medicine.  The ADEDIRGE will have responsibility as follows:

  • To meet regularly with the vice dean for research and graduate education and chairs of the departments of biomedical science in UWSOM;
  • To serve as a liaison between the OHCE and the vice dean for research and graduate education and the chairs of the departments of biomedical science in the UWSOM;
  • To serve as a liaison between the OHCE and the Biomedical Sciences Diversity Taskforce (previously Basic Sciences Diversity Taskforce);
  • To serve on the UW Medicine Bias Incident Response Committee;
  • To serve on the UWSOM Restorative Justice Committee; and
  • To coordinate faculty recruitment and research efforts between OHCE and the departments of biomedical science in the school of medicine (e.g., NIH FIRST Award).

Working Relationships

The primary reporting relationship of this position is to the Vice Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion within OHCE, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education. As noted in the responsibilities above, this individual will also work closely with the faculty and staff of OHCE and the faculty, staff, trainees  and leadership (i.e., chairs, educational program directors, administrators) of the biomedical sciences departments and programs in the School of Medicine.

The ADEDIRGE will supervise a 0.2-0.4 FTE staff member within OHCE dedicated to supporting the development and delivery of OHCE EDI training programs for faculty, staff and trainees in biomedical science departments, research environments and training programs as well as assisting the Office for Faculty Affairs with mentorship training and programing in support of URM faculty and trainees in the biomedical science departments.

Faculty Appointment and Compensation:

The primary appointment of the Assistant Dean for EDI in Basic Sciences Research and Graduate Education shall be with a biomedical science department at the UWSOM. This position will be supported by 0.2 FTE position within OHCE. The position may commit up to 0.8 FTE to biomedical sciences department of the School of Medicine.  The salary for this position will be commensurate with current salary as UW SoM Faculty.  Other compensation associated with this position may include an administrative supplement.  

Qualifications

Educational Requirements

The ADEDIRGE will be a current associate or full professor faculty member in a biomedical science department within UWSOM. Service and advanced training in Equity Diversity and Inclusion will be considered.   

Highly-Desirable Work Experience:

  • Demonstrated leadership of EDI initiatives, working with academic leaders, faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Experience conducting educational programs for faculty, staff and trainees in the biomedical sciences on topics related to EDI.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, supervisory, and teamwork skills.
