Position Description
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research to understand how land management affects salmon populations experiencing climate change in Washington state. The position will be funded for one year, with possibility of extension for one additional year. Imperiled salmonid populations in the West are in crisis due to multiple factors, including declining ocean productivity, barriers to fish passage, poor hatchery practices, overfishing, and habitat loss and degradation. Ongoing climate change is likely to exacerbate many of these problems, and natural resource managers seek to promote salmon recovery in part through implementing land management practices that will benefit them. Salmonids depend on cool, clean water to spawn and rear during the freshwater phase of their life cycle, so management practices that alter these conditions can have large impacts on salmon reproductive success. Practicing land management for salmon may also act as a nature-based solution to climate change, enhancing the ability of riparian forests to capture and store carbon. This research position focuses on understanding how different land management practices, including those focused on natural climate solutions, by The Nature Conservancy and other organizations affect salmon populations experiencing climate change.
The researcher will work with the Science Team of the Washington Chapter of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), whose research informs the conservation, management, and restoration work of TNC. The position will include population modelling, integrating ecosystem and population models, and helping to manage a working group focused on understanding western salmonid-fire-forest management relationships. The researcher will be supervised by Phil Levin (UW/TNC) and Ailene Ettinger (TNC). The position will be in person and based in Seattle, Washington.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD and have no more than four years of total postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. The successful candidate for this position will have expertise and interests in the areas of population modelling, quantitative ecology, conservation, restoration, fisheries, and natural resource management or related fields. The person in this position will be expected to collaborate with project investigators and other researchers and stakeholders.
