Position Details

Position Description

The School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington welcomes applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Photo/Media Program to start in September 2023. This position is 100% full-time and has a nine-month service period.

As per the University of Washington’s Diversity Blueprint, the institution prioritizes attracting and retaining a diverse faculty that reflects our student population. UW has more than 60,000 students, including 31% first-generation college students, over 30% Pell Grant-eligible students, and over 31,000 faculty and staff from over 70 countries across its three campuses. The School of Art + Art History + Design is committed to the goal of faculty diversification.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in artistic practice, teaching, and research that contributes to the intellectual environment of the program, School and artistic community while also offering new perspectives on art practice and pedagogy. We are committed to advancing the field of contemporary art with an emphasis on photography, video, and interdisciplinary approaches. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty and staff on advancing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The candidate will be expected to teach at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate Photo/Media Program.

Faculty work with undergraduate and graduate art students, as well as students from other disciplines in the School and across the University. The Photo/Media undergraduate curriculum advances formal and technical knowledge as well as emphasizing individual research, critical thinking, experimentation, and a comprehensive understanding of contemporary issues in the arts. Graduate students in the MFA Program work closely with Faculty to develop artistic practices that are often interdisciplinary and conceptual in nature. Our students have a diverse range of interests. For example, recent students have created work that addresses race, racism, and (de)coloniality; queer and trans embodiment; indigeneity; intersectionality; digital and social media; power and institutional critique; representation; conceptualism; critical theory; site-specificity, and activist art. The successful candidate will be expected to engage with these and other topics in an inclusive research and learning environment.

The Photo/Media Program facilities include B/W darkrooms, large format digital printers, a state-of-the-art sound studio and equipment, analogue and digital cameras, professional video cameras, lighting equipment, and various editing suites. The Photo/Media Program maintains multiple student galleries, graduate studios, a lighting studio, and classrooms.
