Position Details

Position Description

The Division of Design in the School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington in Seattle invites applications for a full–time tenure–track appointment as an Assistant Professor of Visual Communication Design (VCD). The appointment starts in September 2023 on a 100% full-time, nine-month service period. The teaching load is five courses over three quarters.

Faculty in UW’s School of Art + Art History + Design provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary education to a highly diverse student population, on a campus with more than 60,000 students, including 31% first-generation college students, over 30% Pell Grant-eligible students, and over 31,000 faculty and staff from over 70 countries across its three campuses. The candidate is also expected to actively contribute to the diversity, equity and inclusivity goals of the School and the University (as articulated in departmental statements and in the UW Diversity Blueprint http://www.washington.edu/diversity/diversity-blueprint/).

The UW VCD program is nationally recognized for its strong practice-oriented and process-centered approach to visual problem solving. The program seeks a designer/educator who will engage in teaching and research in one or more of following areas:

  • Motion and animation
  • Visual communication design
  • Interaction design
  • User interface design
  • User experience design
  • Visual storytelling

The candidate is expected to teach at all levels of the design curriculum, from foundations to graduate level Master of Design courses. In addition to teaching, the new faculty member will actively engage in service and research. In the Division of Design, we value critical, practice-based creative research that uses design as a tool to respond to the new social, economic, ethical, and environmental realities of the 21st century. Current faculty in the Division of Design focus on professional practice (developing creative, forward-thinking, award-winning design work) as well as scholarly design research (e.g., climate change, inequity, and the development of humane, positive technology.)

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in a wide variety of facets of the discipline, including critical creative practice, the growing field of self-authored and/or participatory design, diversity, accessibility, sustainability, design ethics, or other design issues. The candidate will be expected to collaborate effectively across the Division’s tracks in Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, and Interaction Design. The candidate could also build bridges with other disciplines and units on campus through collaborative research projects, conferences and/or course work.
