Position Description

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Philosophy with Area of Specialization (AOS): Normative Ethics (including ethical theories and moral psychology), and Area of Concentration (AOC): Open. This is a full-time, tenure eligible position with an anticipated start date of September 2023. Tenure track faculty have an annual service period of nine months (Sept 16-June 15). All University of Washington faculty engage in research, teaching, and service.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust research program that complements existing scholarship in the department; teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; serve on dissertation committees and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; actively participate in service to the university, profession, and broader communities; and promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students.   

The successful candidate will conduct research focused on normative ethics and is expected to teach a variety of courses in ethics at graduate and  undergraduate levels.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in philosophy, or a closely allied field, by the start of the appointment.  Applicants must provide evidence for excellence in research and teaching.

Instructions

Applicants should submit the following materials:

  • Cover letter

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Dissertation abstract

  • Diversity Statement summarizing commitments, contributions, or experience regarding diversity in research, teaching, mentoring, or community engagement

  • Writing sample

  • Research Statement outlining anticipated research agenda for the next 3-5 years

  • Teaching Portfolio including Teaching Statement and evidence of teaching experience and effectiveness

  • 3 letters of recommendation (submitted by letter writers through Interfolio)
