Position Description

The University of Washington, Department of Surgery is recruiting a full-time academic hand surgeon to join our team at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) as part of the Division of Plastic Surgery. The full time, Assistant Professor without tenure by reason of funding (WOT) or Associate Professor WOT or Professor WOT position will offer salary and rank commensurate with training, qualifications, and experience, with an expected start date in Fall 2023. Assistant Professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Associate and full professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.  

 

Clinical activities will include the broad spectrum of Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery, including hand and extremity reconstruction and microsurgery, as well as teaching residents and medical students. This practice may include a significant commitment to laboratory research or clinical outcomes research. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in academic and scholarly activities. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain extramural funding with emphasis on federal grant submissions regarding nerve research and bench/outcomes research related to the individual’s clinical practice.  The successful candidate will be given adequate protected time to develop academic endeavors.  Excellent clinical epidemiologic and basic science research resources are available, including opportunity for involvement with the Institute for Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM), as well as the Surgical Outcome Research Center (SORCE) based within the Department of Surgery. Clinical multidisciplinary collaborations at Harborview Medical Center focused on serving the peripheral nerve patient population will include faculty, staff and researchers from Rehabilitation Medicine, Occupational and Hand Therapy, Radiology and Electro-Diagnostic Medicine. This position will join the longstanding and highly regarded Combined Hand Surgery Service at the University of Washington, between Plastic Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. 

Qualifications

Prospective candidates must have an M.D. and/or D.O. (or foreign equivalent), be certified or eligible to achieve certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or foreign equivalent.  Candidates must also be certified or eligible to achieve Certification in Surgery of the Hand.  Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited hand surgery fellowship is required. 

 

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
