Position Description

The Department of Communication at the University of Washington is hiring a tenure-track assistant professor in interpersonal communication, who will be expected to become a leader in the discipline, will guide our graduate students in quantitative methodologies, will perform service in the interpersonal communication area, and will teach undergraduate and graduate courses that center on interaction processes. The selected applicant will be expected to highlight the challenges and opportunities afforded by interpersonal communication at a personal and social level. This full-time position has an anticipated start date of September 16, 2023 and will have a nine-month service period.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, in Communication or a related field by the start of the appointment. Must demonstrate expertise in quantitative methods and a record of research that speaks to contemporary concerns, such as health communication, social media use, relational communication, social and political influence, intercultural communication, and/or communication within and between organizations. Applicants must demonstrate a publication record that has made important conceptual and theoretical contributions to interpersonal communication.

Instructions

Candidates should submit the following: (1) a letter of interest up to 3 pages outlining the candidate’s research trajectory in interpersonal communication and explaining how that research meets the job criteria and complements/extends existing strengths in the department; (2) a separate teaching statement up to 2 pages that includes the candidate’s pedagogical philosophy and identifies existing courses the candidate is qualified to teach and new courses the candidate would like to create; (3) a diversity statement up to 2 pages that describes the candidate’s experiences with and commitments to difference, race, equity, and social justice in research, teaching, and/or service; (4) a curriculum vitae; (5) two article-length academic writing samples; and (6) the names and contact information of three referees.
