Position Details

Position Description

The Department of English at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in American Indian and Indigenous literary studies. Successful candidates will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to engage in research with a primary emphasis on American Indian and Indigenous self-representation in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  Within this broad specialization, teaching and research should be informed by Indigenous theories and methodologies, and could include the following areas of focus: gender and sexuality, eco-criticism and environmental studies, poetics, genre fiction, “new” media, Indigenous literatures of the Pacific Northwest, and intersections among American Indian/Alaska Native and Oceanic literatures. This position is part of a multiyear cluster hire in American Indian studies across the College of Arts and Sciences, and we look to welcome a new colleague whose work will complement that of faculty in English, American Indian Studies, and other units. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. This position has an anticipated start date of September 2023 and will have a 9-month service period.

Located on the lands and waters of Coast Salish peoples and serving a region with a diverse array of reservation, rural, and urban Indigenous communities, both the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Washington as a whole have made significant investments in American Indian and Indigenous studies. Faculty, staff, students, and community partners enjoy the support of the Office of Tribal Relations, the Department of American Indian Studies, wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ Intellectual House, the Burke Museum, the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute (IWRI), the Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies (CAIIS), and other vibrant resources.

Qualifications

By the time of appointment, applicants should have earned a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in English, American Indian Studies, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Comparative Literature, or related field, with teaching experience and research interests centered in American Indian and Indigenous literary studies. Successful candidates should demonstrate a record of innovative and effective teaching as well as student mentoring; a pattern of research and teaching rooted in American Indian and Indigenous literary studies; a commitment to ongoing professional and scholarly development, broadly conceived, focused on American Indian and Indigenous literary studies; and active participation in departmental, university, and/or professional service, broadly defined.
