Position Description

The UW Department of Biology is a large collaborative and integrative department that provides a supportive research and teaching environment, actively engages with faculty and students on topics of diversity and equity, has a long-term strategic hiring plan, and now is equipped with classrooms designed for active learning in the new Life Sciences Building. The UW Department of Biology is also a nationwide leader in biology education research, integrated with a broad biological research and teaching program stretching from molecules to ecosystems.

The Department of Biology is currently searching for two 100%-FTE, non-tenured 9 month teaching track Assistant Teaching Professor in Physiology. The anticipated start date is September 16, 2023. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to teaching efforts in the area of Physiology, broadly defined. This position will be expected to use modern techniques to probe physiological systems in models including animals, plants, fungi and/or microorganisms, and to study these models using quantitative and modeling approaches.

Teaching experience in these areas and postdoctoral experience are positive factors. We welcome candidates from any background who can articulate how their academic experience fits into this theme. Although this position is broadly for physiologists.

Successful candidates will teach Physiology classes in large-classroom introductory courses as well as upper division courses including laboratory courses. Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a doctorate, or foreign equivalent, in the biological sciences or a related field by the date of appointment.

Applicants must have research and teaching expertise in physiology related areas including ecophysiology, systems biology, and/or molecular/cellular basis of physiology.

1) Two brief statements (<200 words each) summarizing (1) your past teaching accomplishments and (2) how your teaching will broaden diversity and access in biology teaching.   

2) A merged PDF with:

  1. Cover letter describing why you are interested in joining the UW Department of Biology
  2. Curriculum Vitae, including your full publication list
  3. Teaching statement describing your teaching philosophy and specific plans for contributing to the educational mission of the UW Biology Department (2 pages).
  4. A Diversity Statement that explains how you have promoted equity and diversity in the past, and how you will promote inclusion in your classroom environment  (1 page).

3) A publicly accessible link to a  ten-minute video demonstrating best teaching practices in an area of physiology.

4) The names and email addresses of three references who will provide letters of recommendation upon request.
