The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME) at the University of Washington (UW) is looking for two full-time faculty at the levels of Assistant Professor Without Tenure (Job Code 10113) and/or Associate Professor Without Tenure (Job Code 10112). These faculty will carry out basic and applied biomedical informatics research (approximately 80% effort) and engage in a service/practice role within UW Medicine Information Technology Services (ITS) in support of UW Medicine strategic priorities (approximately 20% effort). This is a full-time, indefinite term position with a 12-month appointment. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
We are seeking exceptional candidates who have documented evidence of research success across a broad range of biomedical informatics. We are especially seeking excellence in research that touches on clinical applications, as well as faculty engaged in foundational and methods-focused research that supports clinical application areas. As an example, this might include work (applied or foundational) in secondary use of EHR data. However, we are not seeking a specific niche of research expertise, but rather, excellence in biomedical informatics research broadly, including the ability to work with clinicians and clinical applications.
Prior experience in informatics practice/service capacities is valuable. Experience mentoring and/or teaching MS, Ph.D. and postdoc students in the biomedical informatics domain is beneficial though teaching is not required. Other welcomed attributes include strong computing expertise and a demonstrable history of inter-professional collaboration spanning discovery to application in particular, including clinician collaborators.
The Department of BIME and the UW Medicine health system believe there is a critical synergy between biomedical informatics research and informatics service/practice within the health system. The 20% role involves deeply engaging in key areas in the practice of biomedical informatics in the operational clinical, analytics and research computing areas at UW Medicine in a dynamic real-world health system. The work for this role will be driven by ITS priorities and UW Medicine priorities as they overlap with the candidate’s informatics skills. Oversight and accountability for these activities will be provided by the BIME Chair and senior UW Medicine ITS Leadership.
New faculty will join the numerous other BIME faculty, graduate students, and ~75 UW staff who are working on the spectrum of foundational, applied and operational aspects of clinical informatics and TBI/CRI. The scope of clinical and analytics resources includes: a) inpatient and outpatient electronic health records deployed across 4 hospitals and affiliated clinics and a primary care clinic network, b) multiple data warehouses extracting data from the clinical systems, c) an Accountable Care Organization reporting team, and d) multiple grants in the comparative effectiveness research and Learning Healthcare System domains. The scope of CRI/TBI includes: a) the local CTSA informatics core including being one of the lead sites for a recently funded CD2H grant, b) a research informatics consult service, c) secondary use of EHR data for research including phenotyping (using data repositories from analytics above plus i2b2 instances), d) electronic data capture (REDCap), e) biospecimen acquisition system, f) expanding precision medicine informatics infrastructure, g) acquiring and implementing a Clinical Trial Management System, h) universal consent and consent management. These positions are part of a broader recruitment effort within the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education which includes recruitment of faculty at multiple ranks in the areas of Analytics, Clinical Informatics, Clinical Research Informatics, Precision Medicine/Translational Bioinformatics, and expansion of an ACGME accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship program.
University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The department is seeking multidisciplinary faculty with backgrounds in foundational and/or applied biomedical informatics research who are interested in scholarship, teaching and practice in a highly collaborative academic setting. Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant discipline or an M.D. (or foreign equivalent) with relevant significant formal biomedical informatics related training, scholarship and practice. MD Practitioners will be appointed to the appropriate clinical department, such as Medicine, Surgery, Family Medicine, or Pediatrics, with a joint appointment in BIME. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B Visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The BIME Department consists of 30 core faculty and 60 extended faculties representing 24 departments across the University engaged in a broad range of foundational and applied biomedical informatics research, as well as scholarship and practice activities around medical education. In addition to an active informatics research program, the Department faculty are responsible for the operation, evaluation and refinement of the Biomedical Informatics research training programs (MS, Ph.D., Postdoc with currently 62 trainees), the NIH NLM informatics research training grant, and the joint (with School of Nursing) applied MS in Clinical Informatics and Patient-Centered Technologies (CIPCT, currently 62 active students). The CIPCT program is a fully online program that serves as a didactic foundation of our clinical informatics fellowship. Where appropriate, our faculty aim to translate our foundational and applied scholarship into practice at the UW and partner institutions within our operational clinical and research computing groups. It is expected that new faculty will engage in a similar range of activities including informatics research, teaching, and the practice of analytics and/or clinical informatics and/or clinical research informatics and/or translational bioinformatics.
