Position Description

The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites outstanding faculty candidates to apply for multiple full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level. These positions are on a 9 month service period with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2019. The University of Washington faculty are committed to excellent teaching, outstanding research, and exemplary service. The Mechanical Engineering department’s research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering, including interdisciplinary work in engineering in medicine, robotics and controls, materials, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy. The department currently has 36 full-time tenured, tenure track and research faculty, 408 undergraduates, 163 masters students, 115 PhD students and 18 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow.  More information about the ME department is available at http://www.me.washington.edu.

Candidates with a strong backgrounds in all areas of robotics and controls are particularly encouraged to apply. The Department seeks to build on its existing strengths in human/robotic interaction, automated assembly, system autonomy, machine learning, digital and additive manufacturing, and prosthetics, but the individual’s potential to conduct world-class research and to innovate in robotics and controls is more important than the specific area of specialization. Successful applicants will be expected to leverage the ME Department’s and the University’s competitive advantage in robotics and controls and to help launch multidisciplinary research efforts.

Successful candidates with be expected to develop a high-impact research program with national and international recognition and impact. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to an innovative undergraduate curriculum, and develop graduate courses in their areas of expertise.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD or other foreign equivalent doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline by the date of appointment and excellent communication skills. The successful applicant will be expected to provide innovative, high-quality teaching; to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program; and to contribute to the goals and missions of the department, college, and university.
