Appointment Details


  • Title: Professor Tenure Track
  • Job Class Code: 0108
  • Service Period: 9 or 12 months
  • Appointment Criteria: Must be appointed at a minimum of 50% FTE
  • Duration of Appointment: The initial appointment is for a three-year term. The length of the second appointment is an additional three years. (Faculty Code Section 25-32D)
  • Voting Rights: Yes with 50% or more appointment. (Faculty Code Section 21-32A)
  • Earn types: REG, SUMPDR, E/CLWO, S/L, TPS, ADS, ENS, MLP
    • WOS may only be used for an unpaid joint appointment
    • DPP may only be used in School of Dentistry
  • Salary Floors: Must meet University minimum.
  • Full-time/Part-time: Both. Appointment on a part-time basis, at a minimum of 50% FTE, does not extend the tenure review period. The percentage of appointment must be clearly documented at the time of hire. (Faculty Code Section 25-32D)
  • Eligible for Tenure: Yes. In all cases, the mandatory review for award of tenure must be determined no later than the 5th year of appointment. (Faculty Code Section 25-32D). Primary appointment must have at least 50% tenure. If there is a joint appointment, the tenure can be allocated in one of the following ways:
    • 50-100% in the primary unit, 0% in the secondary unit
    • 67% in the primary unit, 33% in the secondary unit
    • 50% in the primary unit, 50% in the secondary unit
    • In a situation where the split is between a 9-month appointing unit and a 12-month appointing unit, the 9-month appointing unit must be the primary unit

    • Academic Human Resources Ad Approval Notice
    • Copy of online job advertisement from the Chronicle of Higher Education or appropriate print journal
    • Applicant Flow Confirmation Page
    • Visa documents, if applicable
    • Background Check documents, if applicable
  • If a joint appointment is being granted at the time of hire, the following documents are also required
    • Chair/director or dean’s/chancellor’s letter from new joint unit recommending the appointment
    • Concurrence from dean/chancellor of home unit’s school for a joint appointment
    • Faculty vote (including: for, against, abstaining, absent, and total number of eligible voters)
    • Joint Appointment Tenure (Eligibility) Allocation Confirmation, if tenure eligibility is being awarded in joint appointment
    • Joint Appointment Tenure (Eligibility) Agreement, if tenure eligibility is being awarded in joint appointment
    • MOU if applicable
  • Email approval from Academic Human Resources must be received by the hiring unit prior to entering the appointment in OPUS. This email approval must be included in the notes section of the PERM

Termination Details


  • Emeritus Eligibility: N/A
  • A faculty member has a professional obligation to give a written notice of resignation at the earliest possible opportunity. Normally such resignations should be given at least three months prior to the termination date (Faculty Code Section 24-56.A)
  • The unit should forward the resignation letter and the Chair/Director/Dean’s letter of acceptance to AHR.
  • Termination action needs to be entered in OPUS.
