Emeritus / Retiree Appointments

Mandatory retirement for faculty was eliminated effective January 1994. Faculty are, therefore, eligible to continue their employment at the University of Washington until they voluntarily choose to leave, either fully or in some phased-out structure. There are several options available to faculty to reduce or end their active involvement with the University; though, regardless of which option is chosen, continued connection to the University through the University of Washington Retirement Association (UWRA) is encouraged and anticipated. Below are described the several options available for faculty who are considering reducing or ending their active involvement in teaching, research, and service.

Retirement/Emeritus Procedures

Eligible faculty who are retiring only should provide a letter to the Dean/Chancellor with a copy to Academic Human Resources stating the intention to retire. The letter, or a copy, must be sent to Academic Human Resources.

For a retirement please forward the following items to Academic Human Resources

  • Letter from Faculty member stating intent to retire and official date of resignation

At this point the unit may enter the separation into OPUS. Be sure to follow all OPUS separation procedures.

Some faculty may be offered an appointment as Emeritus upon retirement. If a unit plans to offer an Emeritus appointment to a faculty member for the following academic year, a vote should be taken in the quarter prior to the recommended start date.

For an emeritus appointment please forward the following items to Academic Human Resources

  • Letter from Faculty member stating intent to retire and official date of resignation
  • Letter supporting Emeritus appointment from Chair/Director with Dean/Chancellor concurrence and faculty vote

At this point the unit may enter the appointment into OPUS by first separating (code as retirement) and then in a separate action complete the re-hire (emeritus appointment).
