Appointment Details


  • Title: Professor
  • Service Period: 9 or 12 months
  • Appointment Criteria: Must be appointed at a minimum of 50%. Appointment to the rank of Professor requires outstanding, mature scholarship as evidenced by accomplishments in teaching, and in research as evaluated in terms of national or international recognition (Faculty Code Section 24-34A-3)
  • Duration of Appointment: Continuous
  • Tenure: Yes. Primary appointment must have at least 50% tenure. If there is a joint appointment, the tenure can be allocated in one of the following ways:
    • 50-100% in the primary unit, 0% in the secondary unit
    • 67% in the primary unit, 33% in the secondary unit
    • 50% in the primary unit, 50% in the secondary unit
    • In a situation where the split is between a 9-month appointing unit and a 12-month appointing unit, the 9-month appointing unit must be the primary unit
  • Voting Rights: Yes with 50% or more appointment. (Faculty Code Section 21-32A)
  • Salary Floors: Must meet University minimum
  • Full-time/Part-time: Both. Minimum appointment is 50%. The percentage of appointment must be clearly documented at the time of hire.
  • Eligible for Promotion: Not applicable
  • Competitive Recruitment Required: Yes

  • Educational Requirements: Must have a terminal degree in applicable field
  • Documentation Required:
    • Chair/Director’s letter to Dean/Chancellor recommending appointment must include:
      • Faculty vote
      • Rank/Title
      • Start date
      • Service period (either 9 or 12 months)
      • Full-time rate of pay
      • Appointment percent
      • Percentage of tenure
    • Offer letter
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Academic Human Resources Ad Approval Notice
    • Copy of online job advertisement from the Chronicle of Higher Education or appropriate print journal
    • Applicant Flow Confirmation Page
    • Visa documents, if applicable
    • Background Check documents, if applicable*

  • If a joint appointment is being granted at the time of hire, the following documents are also required
    • Chair/director or dean’s/chancellor’s letter from new joint unit recommending the appointment
    • Concurrence from dean/chancellor of home unit’s school for a joint appointment
    • Faculty vote (including: for, against, abstaining, absent, and total number of eligible voters)
    • Joint Appointment Tenure (Eligibility) Allocation Confirmation, if tenure is being awarded in joint appointment
    • Joint Appointment Tenure (Eligibility) Agreement, if tenure is being awarded in joint appointment
    • MOU if applicable

Termination Details


  • Emeritus Eligibility: Yes, at time of retirement. See Professor Emeritus
  • A faculty member has a professional obligation to give a written notice of resignation at the earliest possible opportunity. Normally such resignations should be given at least three months prior to the termination date (Faculty Code Section 24-56A)
