The University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking qualified candidates for Chair of the Department of Bioethics and Humanities. The position is full-time and tenured with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
The Department of Bioethics and Humanities has a forty year history of excellence in scholarly research and teaching. The Department’s original scholarly focus on the humanities has expanded over the past decade to include empirical research in bioethics, with a critical mass of externally-funded faculty investigators. The Department has responsibility for an undergraduate Minor in Bioethics and Humanities, a Bioethics Master’s Program, medical school and residency education, research integrity training, and a nationally recognized Summer Seminar in Health Care Ethics, which it has run successfully for 27 years.
The Department is a broad-based, inclusive community of scholars comprised of 12 regular faculty members, including 1 joint with Medicine and 1 joint with Philosophy. There are 24 adjunct faculty with primary appointments in Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, Medicine, Pediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Psychiatry, as well as in the Schools of Law, Nursing, Public Health, and Arts & Sciences. In addition, there are 14 affiliated faculty from institutions around the country.
Candidates for this critical leadership position should have an ability to be motivated by, able to thrive in, and eager to contribute to a diverse, intellectually stimulating, multidisciplinary environment and must have accomplishments in the following areas:
l. A national reputation with academic expertise in or related to bioethics scholarship and teaching
2. The demonstrated ability to promote and advance departmental excellence through leadership experience in the administration of academic programs and assuming fiduciary responsibilities
3. A track record of securing research funding
4. The ability to teach and mentor students, trainees, and faculty effectively
5. Academic experience within a medical or scientific research environment

Candidates must hold a terminal doctoral level degree such as an MD, PhD, DO, JD or foreign equivalent. The position could include a clinical component depending on the interests of the selected candidate. If clinically active the candidate must be eligible for a Washington State professional license. And, in order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
