The University of Washington (UW) Tacoma invites applications for one or more tenure-track Assistant Professors of Social Psychology in the Division of Social, Behavioral, and Human Sciences (SBHS) within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period. The successful candidate will be an intellectually expansive scholar with training in social psychology whose research and teaching incorporate quantitative and/or qualitative research methods. Regarding the candidate’s area of specialization, we have a strong preference for research that emphasizes social justice such as prejudice, discrimination, and stereotypes in any underserved populations, and/or intergroup conflicts. We believe these research areas can involve students or the Tacoma community more broadly, in line with the mission of our urban-serving university. The position will teach undergraduate courses that contribute to the Psychology major, contribute to a new minor in Social Science Research Methods, and likely develop undergraduate curricula in social psychology. As such, the successful candidate will have a proven record of research and teaching in social psychology.
The successful candidate will be expected to work with diverse student populations including first-generation students, involve students in faculty research, and integrate effectively, high impact pedagogical techniques and technologies into teaching/learning. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations, will be prepared to mentor and engage students, and whose research, teaching, and/or service record that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to engagement of culturally diverse audiences in higher education.
SIAS offers a range of innovative interdisciplinary majors including Psychology; Arts, Media, and Culture; Environmental Studies; Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies; Spanish Language and Cultures; and Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. Although the position primarily contributes to and develop curricula in social psychology, it will also support other interdisciplinary majors and the graduate program in interdisciplinary studies. The position begins September 16, 2018, and requires an earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) at the time of appointment in psychology or a related field. Establishment of an effective and sustainable program of scholarship in the candidate’s field is required for tenure and promotion. Candidates in the final stages of their dissertation will be appointed on an acting basis.
