The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the Department of Global Health within the School of Medicine and the School of Public Health at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill several (up to two) full-time and/or part-time faculty positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor without tenure level.
The faculty will become part of the Tobacco Data Team at IHME, a new team created with funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The successful applicants will have an MD or PhD in epidemiology, population health, biostatistics, health informatics, health economics, health policy, or foreign equivalent in a related field. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in a health-related field and will have at least ten years’ experience studying the effects of tobacco use on health.
Incumbents will be responsible for guiding the Tobacco Data Team and driving the intellectual content required to derive burden of disease estimates related to tobacco use and evaluation of policies aimed to reduce use of and burden of disease attributable to tobacco. The incumbent will engage with the broader tobacco control network and will complement and advance the work of measuring tobacco use and burden, as well as the effects of tobacco control policies and interventions.
The incumbent will guide staff members in strengthening IHME’s relationships with existing collaborators, expanding IHME’s network of collaborators, and interacting with funders to build the network of research related to tobacco usage.
This task will include bridging work undertaken by the Bloomberg global tobacco partners with IHME’s cutting edge burden of disease methodology in order to improve burden of disease estimates through improved access to data and methods used to estimate burden. These efforts will aid more rigorous evaluation of the effect of tobacco control measures on tobacco-related health outcomes across populations. The incumbent should be able to both generate the results and critique them in light of trends in the available data and epidemiological and clinical assumptions where appropriate, determine whether adjustments to models or model assumptions should be made, and finalize results in consultation with other faculty. The incumbent will be expected to present the results both internally and externally and to contribute to appropriate peer-reviewed journal articles and policy reports pertaining to them.
Faculty members will also take on an important leadership role in guiding their research team and in mentoring pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and level of appointment.
