The University of Washington (UW) is seeking candidates to establish and lead a preeminent new Program for Global Cardiovascular Health, a joint effort underway between the Department of Global Health and the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine.

This position will hold a full-time faculty appointment at the University of Washington at the rank of Associate Professor (0112) or Professor (0111). These are 12- month, indefinite, non-tenured appointments.  The University of Washington, located in Seattle, is a leading global university with top ranked Schools of Medicine and Public Health. UW is ranked # 1 among public universities in terms of federal research funding. Its School of Medicine, which serves as the medical school for a five-state region that includes Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, trains physicians and other health care providers for a vast area in the Pacific Northwest that covers more than 25 % of the landmass of the continental United States. Its School of Medicine is ranked # 1 in primary care and rural health.

The Department of Global Health is one of the premier Global Health Programs in the world. Housed jointly in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise of all 16 UW schools and colleges, the department’s 385 faculty use highly interdisciplinary approaches to work with colleagues in 140 countries to improve health, reduce health disparities, and build sustainable health system capacity.  The Department’s major research, educational, and capacity-building programs focus on a broad range of health issues, including several with strong, synergistic links to cardiovascular health, including initiatives to examine cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in resource limited settings; rheumatic heart disease screening and treatment; cerebrovascular disease; drug safety; health metrics; and health systems strengthening and program delivery.  The department’s research programs, which total over $75 million/year, span from interdisciplinary laboratory-based investigation, through multi-center clinical trials, to metrics development, program evaluation and implementation science.

With over 40 regular faculty, 11 acting faculty and 10 clinical faculty, the Division of Cardiology supports a wide range of clinical, training, and research activities. UW Cardiology is widely known for its epidemiologic and translational research in CVD prevention, as well as superior clinical care.  Cardiology faculty help lead the Cardiovascular Health Research Unit and collaborate closely with the Institute for Health Metrics Evaluation, conducting research activities in cardiovascular disease epidemiology, prevention, and implementation science in underserved populations in the United States and throughout the world. The Division’s research portfolio totals more than $10 million/year.

Faculty in the Division of Cardiology and Department of Global Health conduct grant and contract supported research and training activities in Cardiovascular Disease in countries in Asia and Latin America. The UW aims to become a leader in global cardiovascular health.  To that end, the UW Division of Cardiology and Department of Global health are jointly establishing a new Program for Global Cardiovascular Health and are in search of its inaugural leadership.  A successful applicant for this position will be an accomplished expert who will establish, develop, and lead a preeminent Program in Global Cardiovascular Health.  The University is building a culturally diverse faculty and staff and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and covered veterans.

DUTIES: The Director of the Global Cardiovascular Health Program will establish and lead a program of research and training in the area of Global Cardiovascular Health. The incumbent will work closely with faculty, staff and students to develop the vision and priorities for the program; recruit new faculty to build a preeminent program; perform high-impact, innovative, research and mentor faculty and trainees in the global cardiovascular health research enterprise; secure independent grant, foundation and contract funding to support global cardiovascular health research, education and training; and provide leadership in developing research partnerships with other groups at UW, and with local, regional, national, and global partners.

REQUIREMENTS: Candidates for this position must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or foreign equivalent in a relevant cardiovascular or health science field. In addition, the candidate must have a proven track record as an independent Global Cardiovascular Health researcher, with a history of funded grants, substantial publications in the peer reviewed literature, and a stellar record of mentorship. Competitive applicants will be able to demonstrate their potential for leading teams in the development and/or implementation of interdisciplinary research and training programs.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.  In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
